In FF, if you enter a partial string in the quick search and click enter, you're directed to the basic search page with the search results listed. In IE, it redirects to the basic search but does not trigger the search -- you have to click search again to get results (though it does prepopulate the search field with your string).
Both should retrieve the results immediately.
