Changes in payments not showing for events

I have registered someone for an event. I originally list their status as pending from pay later & save.
I pull up list of participants from "find participants" and choose to edit my contact above. I try to enter full payment from both edit contribution – /civicrm/contact/view/contribution? – and edit event registration – /civicrm/contact/view/participant? – but when I return to view the participant they are still showing as owning the original amount.
