Multi Select Search Does not work as expected

I created a custom multi select, alpha field called commitee. It has values
like "Appropriations","Law Enforcement", etc.

When I run an advanced search with no criteria, I see the result in my search
result (I created a profile to include it). In the column, some contacts
have one or more of the above values there comma seperated.

But if I select Appropriations for instance from the advanced search dialog, I
get no results, even though several contacts have this value. Some have only
this value, some have this one and others but none come up...

I have reproduced this bug on the demo site. There is a new custom field called interests. In it there are two values "Bowling" and "Dancing"
I assigned the interest "Bowling" to http://demo.civicrm.org/drupal/civicrm/contact/view?reset=1&cid=98
and both interests to http://demo.civicrm.org/drupal/civicrm/contact/view?reset=1&cid=86

When I run a custom search and select only the interest Bowling, I get no results.
