Acceptable Date Range is incorrect on upgraded Custom Data Date Fields

After upgrading from 4.2 to 4.4 custom data date fields with no setting for years before & after appear to default to 10 years before today's date until 10 years after - making them uneditable for users.

I tested this on demo & when I cleared out the setting for the marriage field I got a DB error (I didn't have logging on so didn't grab a trace) & afterwards the date range for the field was limited to 10 years either side of today's date
