merge records: empty value overwriting existing value results in "1"

merge two contacts where the duplicate contact has empty values in some fields (e.g. middle name and external identifier) and the retained record has values in those fields.

on the merge comparison page, choose to override the existing values with empty values from the duplicate contact.

in the resulting record, a value of "1" will be stored in those fields.
