Membership pages not saving dates

memberships created through contribution pages not saving dates - also observed on demo.

STOP PRESS - this might be a misunderstanding on my part as I'm doing pay later transactions & maybe the dates don't get saved @ this stage

I am not sure if I am a culprit or victim of this as I observed it last night & thought it due to changes I was working on locally - however, I committed what seemed to me to be a very limited safe set of the changes from locally & observed it also on demo.

Some, non-comprehensive checks suggest it may have already been there - however, I seem unable to complete CRM-14197 without pretty serious refactoring - so it may make more sense to fix in my refactored version than to try to fix & then update the refactor
