Can't run the upgrade script

            Description

            I took a test copy of my site and installed 4.5 beta 4, visited the Administration Console screen, saw the message inviting me to run the database upgrade script, clicked to do so, confirmed that I wanted to upgrade the database, got a screen headed "CiviCRM Upgrade Tasks" and saw the progress bar [], but nothing happened.
            The "Retry" and "Skip" buttons do nothing.

            I try to go back to CiviCRM, but I can't get to the CiviCRM menu bar, and (ii) other URLs give me an error, so I guess my test database is broken.
