Can we reconsider "locking down" editing end_date of auto-renew memberships?

End date is locked down in editing for auto-renewing memberships. I spend a lot of time editing manually in the db the end_date of auto-renewing memberships. Particularly monthly.

Example: Monthly recurring, someone who misses a month and rejoins in the grace period extends their membership a month. But this can result in someone getting 'behind' so their end date is perpetually in the past even though they have an active plan.

I have found that editing end date has no adverse affect on the membership, and don't understand why it's locked.
