Add Relationship - Contact(s) field unresponsive

While in a contact record, I clicked Relationships - Add Relationship. I selected "Spouse of" from the drop-down list, then hit tab to go to Contact(s) field. The grayed-out "select contact" became highlighted in blue. Clicking in the field box just put a cursor at the end of the grayed-out text. (You can also double-click to select the grayed-out text and type over it.) If you start typing, it types in the grayed-out font, and if you hit tab, it goes to the next field and deletes what you typed.

If I refresh the page, then after I choose "Spouse of", instead of the next field saying "select contact", the grayed out text says "-select individual" and behaves normally.

Once I have refreshed the Relationships - Add Relationship page, the field functions normally even if I go to a different contact record.
