Custom country multi-select fields used in a Drupal View display the four digit ID number instead of the name of the country

We are using a custom field specified as a country multi-select in order to capture details about a user's international experience. When using this field in a Drupal View to present the list of countries, what is actually displayed is the four digit ID number/s for the countries. Views doesn't seem to offer any options about what gets displayed or how. (Using Drupal 7.39 with Views 3.11)
