On demo site:
Search for contributions by Blackwell, Brzęczysław - look at financial transactions -see that there is one Check (cheque) payment of $800 in the sample data. Click on edit - see that the payment instrument defaults to 'Credit card'. If you then refund this you get some wierd looking transaction data entries.
This is pretty confusing! However, on digging I believe the issue is that the sample data creates invalid combinations of contribution & financial transaction payment instruments
