extension reference lost after switching languages (Joomla/WordPress)

to reproduce in Joomla:

• enable multi-languages
• add a second language
• install an extension
• switch languages (using the language switcher in left sidebar)

This triggers a popup error indicating the extension could not be found. If you visit the extension management page the installed extensions have errors indicating they could not be found.
