CiviCRM API doesn't handle dates for Contribution

            Description

            When trying to use the CiviCRM API, I can select dates against other types in the form of "> 2016-01-01", but not for Contributions. The resulting query constructs into a form of LOWER(civicrm_contribution.receive_date) ; not sure where LOWER() is coming from but when I run the query without it (manually), it works. I tried grep-ing for LOWER() but nothing I change has an impact.
