I'm using CiviCRM 1.7.9379 w/ Drupal 4.7.
I've checked "Should we update the contact on a duplicate match?" on the Profile settings page, and set Duplicate Matching Rule to "email" only.
Duplicates are created when using the same profile form twice with the same information and when using two different profile forms with the same email address. Duplicates are created when using both CiviCRM Profile forms and Standalone forms.
Please let me know what is needed to help troubleshoot this issue. Thanks.
