Participant fields in profile do not carry over to confirming email or registration record

Created a CiviCRM profile in both 1.7 and 1.8 that included Participant Role Status and Notes fields. Created an event and added Demographics fields to top of page and CiviEvent profile with Participant fields to bottom of page. Registered online. Chose Volunteer for role, and entered notes. When confirming email was received Role and Status (the 2 drop down fields) were followed by blanks. Notes appeared in confirming email.

When checked registration online, registration appeared, but Role was set at Attendee, not Volunteer and Notes were blank.
