Event sort-by date displays alphabetically not chronologically

When viewing a listing of events under manage events, sorting by Start Date or End Date sorts the events alphabetically not chronologically.

Administer >> Manage Events >> [sort-by] Starts

This has been checked on the 1.7 demo as well as the 1.8 sandbox
