CiviEvent Register for Free event hangs with Unresponsive Script error

After creating an event in CiviEvent and enabling online registrations for a free (non-paid) event, every time I visit the actual registration page it hangs with repeated Unresponsive Script errors in both Safari and Firefox. The events I created that are paid are fine and don't experience the unresponsive script issue.
