Quick Search in CiviCRM Home Dashboard does not submit the search request

If you enter a search string in the "Quick Search" input field in upper right corner of CiviCRM home (...civicrm/dashboard?reset=1) - and click the Search button... you are taken to the basic search form and your search criteria is prefilled in the that form - BUT the search is not fired. This is apparently due to some changes in the underlying search code - since the form elements for the block are the same as in 1.9 - but the search is invoked properly in 1.9.
