Membership Sign-Up is not working for Anonymous Users

Actually using 2.2.9. I think this is an issue with one my custom fields, but haven't been able to figure it out.

Summary:

I have a complex membership form with one included profile in the header. The profile has 3 note fields, several text fields, and a checkbox list. The membership form works fine when I'm logged in as user 1. However, if I logout and try I get redirected to the home page with the errors below:

• Question field is required.
• Answer field is required.

If I remove the custom profile, then the error goes away and I can process membership normally. At one point, the backtrace was logging to the Civicrm log about an integer not being available, but I'm unable to find that log entry now, and it doesn't seem to be recurring.

I'm really just looking for ideas on the best way to trace this message down. I read in the forums about a database field may not be set properly for my custom fields. I did do some deleting of custom fields from the profile, and rearranging, and added a field. It works for on a clone of the site before I did this changing.

I'm going to try recreating the custom profile and see if I can reproduce the error.

My apologies if this doesn't belong as a bug. With the 2.2.9 version just coming out I wanted to post it here just in case. Any ideas to point me in the right direction will be appreciated.
