custom autocomplete select field in tab creates error

In a custom data group that's set up as a tab, if you set up a field as alphanumeric autocomplete-select, a user will encounter the error:
"Please correct the following errors in the form fields below:
Please select valid custom value."
Inline custom data groups seem to work fine. Even if the same group that wasn't working as a tab is switched to inline, it works fine.
