I have been trying all kinds of combination (self-registration, email verification) but as soon as the civi-profile is enabled on the registration page the email is not sent. Also if addional roles are selected, these are lost in the registration process. Only "authenticated role" is remembered.
Once the user is created, all other actions (deleting, updating, blocking an activiating) is producing the proper e-mail notification.
