Profile - User Registration Doesn't Display Field Validation Errors (Drupal)

If you don't complete a required Profile field in my account/edit (drupal/user/1/edit) - for example leave the Last Name blank - you get a specific error in the top status box and also one next to the field.

If you do the same thing in "create new account" form (drupal/user/register) - all u get is an incomplete error message: "Please correct the errors indicated below..."

I think there may be some issues w/ getting the field-level errors listed in the top status box - but I also think we used to do that (in 1.2 ?). Hopefully we can at least show the field error message(s) next to the field(s) on this form.
