414 Request-URI Too Large

Go to a profile search page - http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/profile?reset=1&force=0&gid=1
In this case, I just hit search which produced 4 pages of results. Each time I page to the next page, it produces a progressively longer URL, until it hits a certain maximum - some can be defined by server, others (like IE) are limited by the browser.

How are these URLs built and what can be done to avoid getting the 414 Request-URI Too Large error after paging a few times?
