Making a report that filters on custom data throws an error if that data is not displayed

Making a custom report from the constituents summary template, I used a custom field to filter (IS NULL), but didn't include it as a display column. This led to an 'unknown column' error because the query did not have a left join to the custom data table.

Adding the field as a display field caused the left join to be added and the report to display.
