Deleting contacts from trash takes far too long

After doing a number of practice imports and deleting the users to start over, I ended up with 18000 deleted users in the trash. When I went to delete them all , it took about 1/2 an hour and the page timed out several times. Only one contact is deleted at a time, rather than a more complex SQL query that could wipe out swathes of them in one go.
