Gender selection isn't populated on Drupal user profile edit form

I'm running civicrm-drupal-php4-v1.4BETA-rev4915M.tgz with mysql 4.0.

I have a profile set up on the drupal registration and user view screens which includes the gender. When users register the information is saved and properly displayed, however the gender option isn't prepopulated when they go to edit their user profile which means they are required to fill this out every time they save information on this screen (it's a required field).
