subtypes lost when using batch update via profile

create a contact with subtypes
search for contact and use batch update via profile
subtypes assigned to the contact are lost – regardless of what fields are present in the profile.
for example, in the demo site if you create a student and then batch update, the contact reverts to a standard individual contact type
