What is ACL? It would be really useful to somehow distinguish between permisisons to view profile listings v. being able to view profile details. Most of what I need is to be able to show publically is that a person is a member, their city and country (and perhaps one or two interests). Then, only allow other users to be able to view profile details.
This could be as simple as hiding a details link on a listing page from various Drupal user role IDs.
