Unable to bulk add contacts to past event

A fundraiser event was created that occurred in the past (before CiviCRM was brought online).

I searched for contacts to add this event as attendees, and chose "Add to event" from the action drop down menu. However, I could not select this past event as an option, even after clicking "Include past events..."
