                Is this the same type of issue that would enable me to control how custom data shows in a profile - ie, we have a big custom data set which are set to have 3 fields per row in the tab display, but when I use the custom data in a profile it reverts to a (very) long single column of multichoice tick boxes.

                It sound like you have a related issue (also related to this bug which was theoretically fixed in 1.8 - http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-1994). As usual, best if you recreate on demo and file a new issue for fix in 2.1.
