Import of csv fails

When I import a csv of email addresses as contacts into civicrm, it fails to import any contact, though all the records are new ones.

the csv has only one column of the email address.

The duplicate spreadsheet gives a vague view contact url like below:

http://localhost/civicrm/contact/view?reset=1&cid=1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,................ listing all the cids in my db.
