memory leak in import

I'm doing an import of 450k records including custom fields using the SQL Import method. It's running (slowly) on a vps with about 1GB of memory and nothing else. top shows that the memory for the apache2 process doing the import has grown very gradually and very steadily from about 245MB on Sunday when the job started to about 296MB today. The job will likely finish up in another 18 hours or so. Let me know if there is something I can do in the meantime to assist in measuring this, unlikley though that is.
